The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
