Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
