The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
