Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, fiends, and dark forces expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Revealing details for the latest installment of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to begin their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team understands precisely where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the narrative’s action—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then settled his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the companion and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to eliminate the target and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the powerful family could enable the team reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them no alternative but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Seekers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can expect discovering which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
